Spinning Yarn

22-10-2010;
Because I was all into the future beauty in my earlier post, it remind me of the 'super yarn spinster' Sandra Backlund!
A former Beckmans student Sandra Backlund is a designer who blends the traditonal craft of knitwear with a modern futurist aesthetic.
Her three dimensional collage knitting is her signature. Sandra creates knitwear which moulds to the body yet does not cling.

There is an architectural and sculptural quality to her designs. Shapes are set like statues. Material squares are attached by a thin strand of wool almost like a cob-web.
In places the soft knits masquerade as chain mail as a model looks set for battle with an outfit of armour like porportions.

I like that while the knits are delicate they are also scratchy ensuring at no point her interpretation of wool is mistaken for prissy.
And even though wool is a fabric traditonally associated with AW Sandra manages to spin it into a light and airy version, making it perfect for SS11.
I think she really makes 3D art with yarns!
